Good day to you all.
Just to let you know I'm still here. I start a session of radium this afternoon hoping to reduce a rather large tumour. I'm managing to get around although a little weak. Great support from family and friends.
Cheers doug

A lot of fuss about Manus lately..I remember a beautiful island paradise with lots of SP..Does anyone remember Mee-am...she of the accommodating nature lol

Doug Marsh Send E-mail Friday, 21 February 2014 07:35
I stopped there once on Parramatta, TV seems to be pronouncing it a little different to how I pronounce it. Can't comment on Mee-am

You were there in 1970 also Doug Marsh as we were both on HMAS Perth on our way to Vietnam. Stopped a day or so for fuel. I went ashore and had a few beers with an old school mate who was based there, ABME Craig Bogg. Unfortunatley Craig was killed in an accident on Manus before our tour was over so never got to see him again.

Interesting comments from Kym Parry on the QSO page re Australia's secret submarines. There I was thinking the gollies had their heads down behind the curtains in the EWO on Torrens when all that time they were actually working. Incredible. Apologies to Kym, Whiz Wheeler, Crowie, Benny etc.
lol

On the heels of the Fleet Review, I've been following Column8 in the Sydney Morning Herald. There has been a week-long discussion of whether Lieutenant is pronounced Loo-tenant or Left-tenant. One contributor said he had been a Sub Left-tenant, a Left-tenant and a Left-tenant Commander. I thought it was pronounced that way in the Army, but I've never heard of a Sub Left-tenant, etc.

Bill Aylott Send E-mail Thursday, 17 October 2013 16:26
Reminds one of the following. "Wunce I coodnt even spell ossifer, and now I is one"

Frank Aldred Send E-mail Friday, 18 October 2013 10:42
Hi Doug - I was one once and I was told very early during recruit training it is loo -tenant. The pongos do it the other way.

Keghead Weaver...Canberra Send E-mail Friday, 18 October 2013 11:15
Suppose it depends which Navy you started off with. When I joined there were "thin-ringers" who became Sub Left-tenants. It's only the 'gobs' who called them loo-tenants, but they also call their LCDR's Commander, sao how do you distinguish between a LCDR and CMDR?

Just viewed some of todays IFR. My God, some of the commentators need to do a short course in Naval terminology

I had a look at the review and fireworks too, and thought the same about the use of pronunciation, nomenclature, etc.

I was on Torrens in 1986 when we celebrated the RAN 75th birthday, how come we are celebrating the 100th birthday in 2013? (just to clear up a discussion topic I am having with other navy mates).

John Curbishley Send E-mail Friday, 4 October 2013 15:35
Chris, the Review is being held to commemorate the centenary of the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet into Sydney on 04 October 1913.

Gday shipmates,
I am still hanging in here, and am between treatments at the moment. The new treatment I am receiving comes with a good record for curing melanomas.
The thing of it is the treatment is a bit savage on the body and makes me pretty crook.
The oncologist has me on steroids which give a false sense of wellbeing. In essence I've got to come off the steroids, feel and be well before I can receive more treatment.
I hope this finds you all well out there.
Regards Doug
