Good to see QSO on Warnambul, was my dad's first sea draft, stores rating onboard when she hit the mine, copped a bit of an injury, what an initiation to the sea

Hey Nev,

Great feedback, happy to have such personal connection with the wreck. If you like would be more than happy to put together package of pix and comments on the dives I did - just email me your postal address ane will put together something when I'm back in Darwin next month. If you have any photographs of the Warnambool in her hey days would appreciate copy,
Heers,
TerryG

Terry,
If you Google "HMAS Warrnambool photo" it will show many including a couple just prior to its descent into Davy Jones' locker. Sandy

Thanks Sandy,

In hindsight I should have done a bit more research before the trip, but, will probably return to the location next year - bitten by the bug.
Appreciate the feedback,

TerryG

Checking the photographic records has provided some interesting info....what I assumed to be mine damage port side of the wreck is not shown in the photos showing the sinking, what I saw must have been salvage damage. Also reported that the wreck of the Warnambool was 'sold' to the "Southern Cross Diving and Salvage Company" in 1972.
Of the four recorded deaths, Signalman Lott is reported as 'missing, presumed drowned' - are his remains still in the wreck?
What I'm getting to is that on the AUS charts Warnambool is shown as ordinary wreck symbol, not 'historic wreck' that ensures the site is protected. This doesn't sit easy with me, Warnambool had a fine war record, she was sunk when Australia was still technically at war in 1947 (I didn't know that) and I believe she deserves protection as part of our naval heritage. Will follow this up with QLD Heritage Dept - could do with some support here, maybe my old buddy Skeet Dowling could help out with some advice.

This post is a bit long winded, but final snippet I discovered is that Bathurst class sister ship "Whyalla" is maintained intact as corvette memorial in that SA city. Will be visiting her soon, sans scuba gear

Cheers
Terry G

Morning Terry, you are probably aware that the Castlemaine is alongside in Williamstown and preserved as an historic ship - in good nick and looks a picture. Can have a good look at her on the web...Regards, Frank Hoy

Thanks Frank,

big grin Go the Bunnies! For all those long suffering Bunnies supporters (Kev & Ron Griffin, Dennis O'Sullivan, Watson TV) who sat with me on the hill at Redfern in the 70s and 80s - it has been a long time coming but it was worth the wait. billy Bacon, rest his soul, would have loved it! Now to go back to back.

Kev Ruwoldt Send E-mail Thursday, 9 October 2014 06:12
Another died-in-heart Bunny supporter is Tony "Tackers" Miles. I can still remember Tackers wanting to take on the Dragon supporters on the Hill in 66. Took me ages to drag him out of the ground before he got done over. Those were the days!!!! frown

Was Eddie Reid with us? Spoke with Eddie Fressard cupla years back, was working in newspaper industry. Dont know if still with us. Do you remember Lt Cdr Kidwah, Indian exchange survey officer using the heads onboard while we were in Capt Cook dock GI. Flushed the effort onto painters & dockers. Found the culprit because his religion was to shower afterwards

Keghead Weaver Send E-mail Friday, 26 September 2014 12:32
You pair are making me 'homesick' with McHale's Navy. On Paluma I thought WE were McHale's Navy 'cause we had every 'reject' in pussers in our crew. The Navigator had a sprog while we were at sea and the 'Bells telegram' told him that "Andrew has arrived". Fancy calling your son after the "R.N." Good runs ashore in Spencers Gulf though!!

peter baggott Send E-mail Friday, 26 September 2014 17:47
that's true keghead ,but you only had ten rejects,we had sixty,,,

Scoops Send E-mail Friday, 26 September 2014 22:09
Are you Peter and Keghead admitting to the fact that you are "Rejects" or are you trying to say you were the only non rejects on the Barcoo and the Paluma? We are all getting confused here so please come out and admit the truth. Tks

Keghead Weaver Send E-mail Sunday, 28 September 2014 08:58
Scoops. You know better than to suggest a communicator could POSSIBLY be a "Reject"!! Who else could the "Rejects" go to when they wanted to
send "Dear Mum, send 'mun', love Son"??

Keghead Weaver Send E-mail Sunday, 28 September 2014 09:06

Think that here we are coming up to round 19 of the AFL and Doug Marsh has not posted comments about how hard his Dockers are done by, even after their loss to St Kilda, that he has now changed his allegiance to a team with different colours as the purple haze became too much for him.

Doug Send E-mail Thursday, 31 July 2014 09:50
Scoops maaate. We're just playing with their tiny Eastern States minds, you can get better odds now than when we were no.2 You'd think their tiny Eastern States teams would do better after all the money honest hard-working Sandgropers put into the AFL through the equalisation scheme. Lazy Victorians still think its the vfl, we prop up their economy through the GST and prop up their teams with the magnificient Dockers and slightly less magnificient Eagles
